How long does the dental implant process take?

Dental implant placement typically takes about one to two hours per implant on the day of the procedure. However, the full process, including healing, osseointegration, and final restoration, can take three to six months or more, depending on treatment needs and individual healing times.

The Dental Implant Process

How exactly does implant placement go? Here’s a detailed breakdown!

  • Consultation — An evaluation of any damaged teeth, jawbone, and overall oral health using x-rays and digital scans.
  • Treatment planning — After the assessment, a treatment plan is created based on the state of the site(s) of tooth loss, and the possible need for procedures like dental extractions or bone grafting.
  • Dental extraction (if necessary) — If part of a damaged tooth remains in the socket, it must be extracted and allowed to heal before implant placement.
  • Bone grafting (if necessary) — If your jawbone density is insufficient to properly support an implant, additional bone can be grafted to the jawbone to bolster strength.
  • Placement — Implant placement begins with an incision into the gum tissue to the jawbone underneath, in which a small hole is drilled. The implant is then meticulously placed.
  • Osseointegration — Over months after placement, the implant fuses with the jawbone through osseointegration, permanently anchoring it as a replacement tooth root.
  • Restoration — Once your gums have properly healed, using new impressions, your dentist determines the specifications for a custom-made long-term restoration, frequently a dental crown.
